Charter the Med

Earn Your SLC™

Want to Charter in the Mediterranean? You Need a SLC™!

Why? Because the laws of many Mediterranean countries (like Italy, Greece, and Croatia) require an ICC (International Certificate of Competency) or SLC (Sailing License and Credentials). And so do bareboat charter companies in those countries.

In North America, the ICC is difficult to obtain. But you can achieve the SLC with Calypso Sailing Life and NauticEd!

How Do I Get a SLC?

You can find all the details on the NauticEd website. In a nutshell:

  • Have a government issued boating license (if you don't have a Coast Guard or RYA license, you can get one for free in US States or Canada)

  • Earn the NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master certificate, including at least 50 days of logged sailing experience on appropriately sized vessels (at least 25 days as master)

  • Pass the SLC assessment and verification of theory knowledge test with Calypso Sailing Life

  • Pay the $95 SLC license fee to NauticEd

How Much Does it Cost?

The typical cost to achieve an SLC is $1,995 per person which includes:

  • NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master courses

  • 2 days of pre-assessment training and practice on our Leopard 48 sailing catamaran, Calypso

  • 1 day of SLC assessment also on Calypso (you must demonstrate competency to pass the assessment)

In addition, you will need to:

  • Earn another 47 days of logged experience on an appropriate sized vessel with at least 25 days as master of the vessel

  • Hold a government-issued boating license (we can point you in the right direction if you don't have one)

  • Pay the SLC license fee to NauticEd

Other terms and conditions apply. These costs are typical for an experienced bareboat charter skipper. Additional training is available to help you achieve the Bareboat Charter Master rank or Catamaran endorsement, if desired. Or, if you only need the SLC assessment, we can provide that, too.
